Restoring from a backup

RayDB allows you to restore your PostgreSQL cluster from automatic or manual backups to recover lost data or revert to a previous state.

When to Restore a Backup

  • Data Loss or Corruption: Restore your cluster if data was accidentally deleted or corrupted.
  • Application Rollback: Revert to a previous backup before applying major changes.
  • Disaster Recovery: Restore operations after unexpected failures or outages.

Restoring from an Automatic Backup

Automatic backups are taken daily and stored for a defined retention period.

Steps to Restore:

  1. Log in to the RayDB Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the Clusters section and select the cluster you want to restore.
  3. Open the Backups tab.
  4. Select an available backup from the list.
  5. Click Restore and confirm the action.
  6. The restoration process will begin, and you’ll be notified once it’s complete.

Restoring from a Manual Backup

If you have created a manual backup, you can restore it by uploading the backup file.

Steps to Restore a Manual Backup:

  1. Log in to the RayDB Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the Clusters section and select your cluster.
  3. Go to the Backups tab.
  4. Click Upload Backup and select the backup file.
  5. Click Restore to initiate the process.

Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR)

For more granular recovery, RayDB supports Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR), allowing you to restore your cluster to a specific timestamp within the retention window.

Steps for PITR:

  1. Go to the Backups Tab in your cluster settings.
  2. Select Point-in-Time Restore.
  3. Enter the exact timestamp you want to restore to.
  4. Click Restore and wait for the process to complete.

Considerations and Best Practices

  • Backup Verification: Regularly test backup restores in a staging environment.
  • Downtime Awareness: Restoring may temporarily impact availability, so plan accordingly.
  • Data Consistency: Ensure application services are in sync after a restore.
